West Auckland ground conditions

West Auckland is not one soil type, and it matters more here than in most parts of the city. A good deal of the west sits on heavy clay that holds water and moves with it, and the Waitakere foothills bring slope, run off and fill to deal with as well. Both of those are handled in the base and the drainage rather than in the paving, which is why we do our own excavation and base course rather than laying over someone else's preparation. On a sloping or clay site, what goes in underneath is most of the job.

Subdivisions and developers

A large part of the growth out west is new subdivision work around Kumeu, Huapai, Riverhead, Whenuapai, Hobsonville and Westgate. We work as a subcontractor to main contractors and developers on external works packages - driveways, footpaths, kerbing, retaining and shared spaces - and are used to working to a programme, to an engineer's detail, and around other trades on a live site.

For homeowners we do the whole job, from taking out the old surface through to the finished driveway or courtyard. You get a fixed written price with the finish and specification set out, one contractor responsible for the ground and the surface, and a crew that turns up when we said we would.
